Title
Halifax and Bermudas Telegraph Company
Section Gfx

The Bermuda Cable office at 6 Front Street, Hamilton around 1900.

IN 1884 A Royal Commission recommended that there should be a direct cable between the West Indies and Halifax, Nova Scotia. In 1889 the British Government decided to go ahead with the project and link the naval base at Nova Scotia with the British Naval harbour at Hamilton, Bermuda. The Halifax and Bermudas Telegraph Company was established to carry out the work which was put out to tender with the promise of a 20 year subsidy.

In 1935 a working agreement enabled the West India and Panama company to take over the operating assets of the Halifax & Bermudas and in 1939, the parent company became part of Cable and Wireless (West Indies) Limited.
