IN 1928, AS a result of the increasing effect of radio competition on the cable services, the Imperial Wireless & Cable Conference was convened to:
"examine the situation which has arisen as a result of the competition of the Beam Wireless with the cable services, to report thereon, and to make recommendations with a view to a common policy being adopted by the various governments concerned".
After many meetings it was proposed that the overseas telecommunications of the Empire, both cable and radio, should be merged into one system. Two companies were formed; a merger company called ‘Cables and Wireless’, which handled the shares, and a communications company called ‘Imperial and International Communications Ltd’. This name was chosen to clearly describe the type of communications operations that the company was involved with but it was shortlived. In 1934, the name was changed to Cable and Wireless Limited with the holding company renamed Cable and Wireless (Holdings) Limited.
