IN JULY 1890, a message was sent to Queen Victoria by the Governor of Bermuda to celebrate the opening of a telegraph link with Britain. This was the beginning of the long and close relationship between Bermuda and the group of companies which are the ancestors of Cable & Wireless. In 1925, automatic telegraph reception and transmission was introduced followed by the installation of a radio station in 1928.
In 1962 the Bermuda to USA co-axial cable service was opened and in 1966, Cable & Wireless completed a new co-axial cable between Bermuda and Tortola in the British Virgin Islands. In 1984 a satellite earth station was installed. Today, Bermuda is the home of Cable and Wireless (Network Services) Limited, which operates worldwide.
