THE FIRST LINK between Bahrain and the Cable & Wireless family of companies came about in 1916 when the Indo-European Telegraph Company established a wireless link between Bahrain and the international cable system at Bushire. In 1931, Imperial and International Communications (to become Cable & Wireless) took over communications in Bahrain and by the end of the 1930s, Bahrain was linked to other Middle-Eastern countries and the international cable network.
At the separation of India and Pakistan in 1947, many of the company’s Hindu staff at Karachi fled to Bahrain. Many of these Asian members of staff were still working there in the 1970s. Bahrain was the location of one of the company’s earliest earth stations in 1969. Digitalisation of the whole network was completed in 1992.
