Stamps commemorating the opening of the Qatar satellite earth station.

DUE TO ITS key position on the world map, the Middle East has been a focus of cable laying activity since 1870. Since that time, Cable & Wireless has been involved in a wide variety of projects in the region. For example, in 1931 Imperial and International Communications took over communications in Bahrain and in 1935 Cable & Wireless secured the concession for operating telecommunications in Saudi Arabia. In 1947 a new 21 year concession in Saudi was granted.

In the 1960’s the Middle and Far East was an area of growth for Cable & Wireless and in 1966 Tropospheric Scatter radio links between Bahrain, Doha (Qatar) and Dubai were established. The 1980’s also saw new ventures in the Middle East in the form of earth station installations and new switching networks. Today the Middle East remains a key area of Cable & Wireless activity.
