Emergency Communications

A Mercurycard issued during the Gulf War, 1991.

IN TIMES OF conflict and crisis, communications play a vital part. Crises can be brought about by natural disaster or war but in either case, the protection and, where necessary, the re-establishment of communications is vital. It is often at a personal level that the importance of communications in reassuring family and friends is most clearly seen.

During both World Wars, the Cable & Wireless company played an important role in maintaining and restoring communications. More recent examples of the company’s involvement in easing the strain of crisis include the provision of telephones and Mercurycards for the services in Saudi Arabia during the Gulf War.
