‘EXILES CLUB’ IS the name which was given to Cable & Wireless staff clubs around the world. The name originates from the old telegraph station at Porthcurno, West Cornwall which was, in the 19th century, more remote than any other company outpost; once or twice a week a horse-drawn bus ran to Penzance eight miles away but faces from the outside world were rarely seen in the valley.
The name ‘Exiles’ soon became part of the address on mess notepaper and as people who served their probationary period at Porthcurno were posted abroad, so the name came to be used all around the world.
