India from the 1920's
Section Gfx

A selection of Indian Telegrams from the 1920’s and 30’s.

IN 1929, FOLLOWING the Imperial Telegraphs Bill and the creation of the combined radio and cable company Imperial and International Communications, the Indo-European Telegraph Company was taken over. Three years later, the Indian Cable & Radio Communications Company was formed to amalgamate the country’s overseas wireless and cable services. Seventy-five percent of the company was owned by Cable & Wireless which received payment of a wayleave, had a share of profits and appointed four of its twelve directors. After the Second World War, the Indian Government took the operation of external communications into its own hands.

Following the partitioning of India and Pakistan when independence was granted on the 15th August 1947, Cable & Wireless continued to operate the cable service from Karachi and to install radio equipment in Pakistan.

Today, Cable & Wireless has a representative office in India.
