Cable & Wireless was one of the pioneers of mobile communications. The Company built and operated the world’s first cellular network in Qatar in 1978.
1991 saw the establishment of a new Cable & Wireless International Mobile group to keep international developments under review. By 1992, Cable & Wireless had 15 mobile communications operations in service in different countries and many more in the planning stages. The development of mobile communications is one of the core areas of Cable & Wireless’ planned business strategy for the 1990’s. By 1994, Cable & Wireless provided cellular radio services in 24 countries around the world, including Mercury One-2-One in the UK.
