SPORT PLAYED A major part in providing recreation for both UK and foreign service staff of the telegraph companies. It also encouraged physical fitness and strength, which was often essential, especially where men were posted to remote places where all kinds of hazards might have to be dealt with.

The importance of sport within the company is reflected in the literature which prescribes the clothing men were required to take with them to their foreign postings:

In addition to everyday clothing…
1 muffler or scarf for tennis.
1 Exiles Blazer.
1 Exiles Cap.
1 Exiles Ties – Bow Knot.
4 Pairs socks, Lambswool, white for tennis.
1 pair boots or shoes, rubber soles for tennis.
6 shirts with collar attached, white for tennis

(from ‘Memorandum re Outfits’ 1923)

When applying for a job, the ability to excel at sport, notably cricket, was a distinct advantage. Tennis was the sport most commonly available to those posted abroad.

Winning rifle team, Alexandria 1910.

Exiles water polo team, Aden 1926.

The service rifle competion Broderick Challenge Cup.

The olympic flame on the way to Wembley, carried by A S Pirie and his son, July 1948.
