THE INVOLVEMENT OF Cable & Wireless in the UK market increased enormously with the formation of Mercury Communications Ltd in 1981. In 1994, 20% of Mercury was sold to BCE of Canada. Mercury established its own long distance network, comprising optical fibre cables and digital microwave links. The network ran from the North of Scotland to the South coast.
Mercury offered a full range of long distance and international telecommunications services for both business and residential customers. In addition to voice and data transmission the company supplied messaging systems, mobile communications and a full range of customer equipment.
In 1997, Mercury became part of a new company called Cable & Wireless Communications.
