IN 1938 CABLE & Wireless became responsible for the fixed wireless services of Hong Kong and came to an agreement with the Hong Kong Telephone Company over the provision and connection of external telephone services for the national network. Since that time Hong Kong has continued to be a key centre of operation.
Cable & Wireless provides both domestic and international telecommunications services in Hong Kong through the operating companies of its subsidiary, Hong Kong Telecom. The services operate on one of the most highly advanced fibre optic networks in the world.
In 2000, Cable & Wireless announced that it intended to accept an offer by Pacific Century Cyberworks (PCCW) for C & W HKT
Hong Kong’s first satellite earth station was completed by Cable & Wireless in 1969 and a second, working to the Indian Ocean satellite, was opened in 1971.
HongKong Telecom was floated on the Hongkong Stock Exchange in 1988.
