1871 – In this year a newly trained telegraph operator earned £1 a week.

1918 – A newly trained operator with the Eastern Telegraph Company earned £5 a month plus an allowance for rent. The Western Telegraph company paid juniors around 12s 6d a week.

1929 – Number of staff 9,494

1931 – Staff reduced to 8,409 1950 – overseas staff numbered 8,200 and UK staff 800

1970 – Number of staff worldwide 10,535

1980 – Number of staff worldwide 11,599

1990 – Number of staff worldwide 37,681
