Title
Cooke & Wheatstone and the Telegraph
Section Gfx

The two-needle telegraph apparatus used on early inland lines.

CHARLES WHEATSTONE WAS originally a musical instrument maker. In the 1830’s his interest in sound led him to experiment with electrical communication. He became Professor of Experimental Philosophy at Kings College London and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1836. In 1837 he was introduced to William Fothergill Cooke who was also working on the development of the telegraph.

They went into partnership and developed a viable telegraphic system. This was first demonstrated to the public on 24th July 1837 when they ran a telegraph line along the railway track from Euston to Camden Town and successfully transmitted and received a message.
